Pythagorean Numerology: The Letter Chart, How to Calculate Your Core Numbers, and Pythagorean vs Chaldean

Pythagorean numerology explained: the 1–9 letter chart, how to calculate all seven core numbers (Life Path, Expression, Soul Urge, Personality, Birthday, Maturity and Personal Year) with one full worked example, the Y rule, master numbers 11, 22 and 33, karmic debt numbers, what each number means, where the system really comes from (Pythagoras to L. Dow Balliett), and how it differs from Chaldean numerology, with the same name calculated both ways.

The short answer: Pythagorean numerology is the most widely used system of numerology in the West. It gives every letter of the alphabet a number from 1 to 9 in alphabetical order (A = 1, B = 2 … I = 9, then J = 1 again), and reads your full birth name and date of birth as a set of core numbers, above all your Life Path number. It’s named after the Greek philosopher Pythagoras, who taught that number underlies everything, though the letter system itself took shape in the early 20th century.

Where Pythagorean Numerology Really Comes From

Pythagoras (c. 570–495 BCE) founded a school in Croton, southern Italy, whose members believed that number is the basis of reality: musical harmony, the movements of the heavens and even qualities like justice could be expressed in numbers. Pythagoreans gave numbers characters (one as unity, ten as perfection, shown in the triangle of dots they called the tetractys).

The letter chart that bears his name is much more recent. The word “numerology” only appears in English around 1907, and the modern system was developed by the American writer L. Dow Balliett, whose books in the early 1900s combined Pythagorean number ideas with the letters of a name. Her student Juno Jordan refined it over the following decades, and books such as Florence Campbell’s Your Days Are Numbered (1931) carried it to a wide audience. So “Pythagorean” honours the philosophy behind the system; the method itself is a 20th-century creation.

How to Calculate Your Numbers: A Full Worked Example

We’ll use a fictional person, Emma Rose Carter, born July 14, 1990. Reduce every total by adding its digits until you reach a single number, except 11, 22 and 33, the master numbers, which most numerologists keep.

1. Life Path number

Reduce the month, day and year separately, then add:

  • Month: July = 7
  • Day: 14 → 1 + 4 = 5
  • Year: 1990 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19 → 1 + 9 = 10 → 1
  • Total: 7 + 5 + 1 = 13 → 1 + 3 = Life Path 4

2. Expression (Destiny) number

Give every letter its value from the chart and reduce each name, then add:

NameLettersTotalReduced
EMMAE 5 · M 4 · M 4 · A 1145
ROSER 9 · O 6 · S 1 · E 5213
CARTERC 3 · A 1 · R 9 · T 2 · E 5 · R 92911 (master number)

5 + 3 + 11 = 19 → 1 + 9 = 10 → Expression 1

3. Soul Urge number

Add only the vowels: E 5, A 1 (Emma) + O 6, E 5 (Rose) + A 1, E 5 (Carter) = 23 → Soul Urge 5

4. Personality number

Add only the consonants: M 4, M 4 (Emma) + R 9, S 1 (Rose) + C 3, R 9, T 2, R 9 (Carter) = 41 → Personality 5

Check: Soul Urge + Personality = Expression (5 + 5 = 10 → 1). If they don’t match, recount a letter.

5. Birthday number

The day of birth: 14 → Birthday 5.

6. Maturity number

Life Path + Expression: 4 + 1 = Maturity 5.

7. Personal Year number (2026)

Birth month + birth day + the current year, each reduced: 7 + 5 + 1 (2026 → 10 → 1) = 13 → Personal Year 4.

Reading Emma’s numbers together: a Life Path 4 (building something solid) with an Expression 1 (leadership, independence) suggests someone who leads by being dependable. Three 5s (Soul Urge, Personality and Birthday) add a strong need for freedom and variety, so the classic tension in her chart is stability vs adventure, and her Maturity 5 suggests life opens up and becomes more adventurous with age. A Personal Year 4 in 2026 favours steady work on long-term plans.

The Rules That Trip People Up

  • Use your full birth name, exactly as on your birth certificate, including middle names. Some numerologists also read your current name for how your energy has changed.
  • The Y rule: Y counts as a vowel when it acts as one, such as when there’s no other vowel in the syllable (“Lynn”, “Bryan”), and as a consonant when it sounds like one (“Yolanda”).
  • Master numbers (11, 22, 33): when a total reaches one of these, most numerologists keep it rather than reducing to 2, 4 or 6. Some check for masters at every stage; others only in the final total.
  • Karmic debt numbers (13, 14, 16, 19): when one of these appears before the final reduction (Emma’s Life Path passes through 13, and her birthday is the 14th), traditional numerology reads it as a lesson to work through: 13 hard work and patience, 14 balance and moderation, 16 humility and rebuilding, 19 independence balanced with accepting help.
  • Reduce the parts, then the whole. Reducing month, day and year separately (as above) is the standard method and avoids losing master numbers.

Pythagorean vs Chaldean Numerology

The other major system is Chaldean numerology, associated with ancient Babylon. It assigns numbers by the sound of each letter, uses only 1 to 8 (9 is considered sacred and never assigned to a letter), and usually reads the name you use now.

The Chaldean chart:

12345678
A I J Q YB K RC G L SD M TE H N XU V WO ZF P

The same name, both ways: in Chaldean, EMMA = 14, ROSE = 17 and CARTER = 17, a total of 48, which reduces to 12 → 3. In Pythagorean, the same name gives an Expression 1. That’s why two numerologists can give you different numbers: they’re using different charts, not making a mistake.

PythagoreanChaldean
Letter values1–9 in alphabetical order1–8 by sound; 9 never used for a letter

Compound numbersReduced to a single digit (except masters)The two-digit total (48 above) is read too

Neither is “more accurate”. Pythagorean is the standard for personal readings in the English-speaking world; Chaldean is popular for choosing names.

Getting a Numerology Reading

Calculating your numbers is the first step. A numerologist reads them together, how your Life Path, Expression and Soul Urge support or pull against each other, and uses your Personal Year for timing. Many tarot readers and astrologers combine numerology with their main method. Readers we’ve reviewed who use numerology:

  • Psychic Logan (Purple Garden, $4.99/min): life path, destiny and love questions, 64,955 readings.
  • Truelovetarot (Purple Garden, $6.99/min chat): a certified tarot reader and numerologist with a perfect 5.0 across 40,061 readings.
  • Golden Eye (Kasamba, $4.99/min chat): tarot, astrology and numerology across 113,722 readings since 2004.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Pythagorean numerology?

The most common Western system of numerology. It assigns the numbers 1 to 9 to the letters of the alphabet in order and reads your full birth name and date of birth as core numbers such as the Life Path, Expression and Soul Urge.

What is the Pythagorean numerology chart?

1 = A, J, S; 2 = B, K, T; 3 = C, L, U; 4 = D, M, V; 5 = E, N, W; 6 = F, O, X; 7 = G, P, Y; 8 = H, Q, Z; 9 = I, R.

How do I calculate my Life Path number?

Reduce your birth month, day and year to single digits separately, add them, and reduce again, keeping 11, 22 and 33. For July 14, 1990: 7 + 5 + 1 = 13 → Life Path 4.

Did Pythagoras invent numerology?

Not the modern system. Pythagoras and his followers taught that number underlies reality and gave numbers symbolic qualities, but the letter chart and core numbers were developed in the early 20th century by L. Dow Balliett and her student Juno Jordan, and named in his honour.

What is the difference between Pythagorean and Chaldean numerology?

Pythagorean assigns 1 to 9 in alphabetical order and uses your full birth name. Chaldean assigns 1 to 8 by the sound of each letter, never uses 9 for a letter, reads compound numbers and usually uses the name you go by now.

Which numerology system is more accurate?

Neither is objectively more accurate. Pythagorean is the standard for personal readings in the West and is easier to calculate; Chaldean is often preferred for name changes and business names. Use one system consistently.

Is Y a vowel in numerology?

When it sounds like a vowel or there’s no other vowel in the syllable (Lynn, Bryan), yes; when it sounds like a consonant (Yolanda), no.
