The short answer: a birth chart (or natal chart) is a map of where the Sun, Moon and planets were at the exact moment and place you were born. To read it, look at three layers in order: the planet (what part of you: the Moon is emotions, Venus is love), the sign it’s in (how it expresses itself: Venus in Leo loves boldly), and the house it falls in (where in life it shows up: Venus in the 7th house points to partnership). Then add aspects, the angles between planets that show which parts of you work together or pull against each other. Start with your Sun, Moon and Rising sign, the “big three”, and build out from there.
| Layer | Question it answers | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Planet | What part of you? | Mars = drive, desire, how you act |
| Sign | How does it express itself? | Mars in Capricorn = disciplined, strategic, patient |
| House | Where in life? | Mars in the 10th house = career and public life |
| Aspect | How does it connect with the rest of you? | Mars trine Jupiter = confident, lucky momentum |
What You Need to Cast Your Birth Chart
- Date of birth
- Exact time of birth, ideally to the minute (check your birth certificate or hospital record)
- Place of birth (city and country)
Any reputable free chart calculator turns these into a chart in seconds. Birth time matters most for the Rising sign and houses: the Ascendant moves through all 12 signs in about 24 hours, roughly one sign every two hours, so a time that’s off by an hour can change your Rising sign and shift every house. If you don’t know your time, you can still read your planets’ signs (the Moon may be uncertain, since it changes sign every two to two and a half days), and an astrologer can attempt rectification, working backward from major life events to estimate it.
Step 1: The 10 Planets (What)
In astrology the Sun and Moon are counted as “planets”. Each one represents a part of your personality and life.
| Planet | Symbol | Represents | Moves through a sign in about |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | ☉ | Core identity, purpose, vitality | 1 month |
| Moon | ☽ | Emotions, needs, instincts, comfort | 2–2.5 days |
| Mercury | ☿ | Thinking, communication, learning | 3–4 weeks (longer when retrograde) |
| Venus | ♀ | Love, attraction, beauty, values, money | 4–5 weeks (about 4 months around a retrograde) |
| Mars | ♂ | Drive, desire, anger, courage | about 6–7 weeks |
| Jupiter | ♃ | Growth, luck, wisdom, expansion | about 1 year |
| Saturn | ♄ | Discipline, responsibility, limits, maturity | about 2.5 years |
| Uranus | ♅ | Change, freedom, innovation | about 7 years |
| Neptune | ♆ | Dreams, intuition, spirituality, illusion | about 14 years |
| Pluto | ♇ | Transformation, power, rebirth | 12–30 years |
Personal planets (Sun to Mars) move quickly and describe your individual personality. Social planets (Jupiter, Saturn) describe how you grow and mature. Outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) move so slowly they mark whole generations, and matter most personally when they sit on an angle or aspect a personal planet.
Step 2: The 12 Signs (How)
The sign colours how a planet behaves. Each sign has an element (its temperament) and a modality (its pace).
| Sign | Element | Modality | Expresses as | Traditional / modern ruler |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Fire | Cardinal | Bold, direct, pioneering | Mars |
| Taurus | Earth | Fixed | Steady, sensual, loyal | Venus |
| Gemini | Air | Mutable | Curious, quick, social | Mercury |
| Cancer | Water | Cardinal | Nurturing, protective, sensitive | Moon |
| Leo | Fire | Fixed | Warm, expressive, generous | Sun |
| Virgo | Earth | Mutable | Precise, helpful, analytical | Mercury |
| Libra | Air | Cardinal | Harmonious, fair, relational | Venus |
| Scorpio | Water | Fixed | Intense, private, transformative | Mars / Pluto |
| Sagittarius | Fire | Mutable | Adventurous, optimistic, philosophical | Jupiter |
| Capricorn | Earth | Cardinal | Ambitious, disciplined, practical | Saturn |
| Aquarius | Air | Fixed | Independent, inventive, humanitarian | Saturn / Uranus |
| Pisces | Water | Mutable | Imaginative, compassionate, intuitive | Jupiter / Neptune |
- Fire signs act, Earth signs build, Air signs think and connect, Water signs feel.
- Cardinal signs start things, Fixed signs sustain them, Mutable signs adapt.

Step 3: The 12 Houses (Where)
The houses divide the sky into 12 areas of life. The 1st house begins at your Ascendant (Rising sign) and the rest follow counter-clockwise around the chart.
| House | Area of life | Natural sign |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Self, appearance, first impressions, how you begin things | Aries |
| 2nd | Money, possessions, self-worth | Taurus |
| 3rd | Communication, siblings, short trips, learning | Gemini |
| 4th | Home, family, roots, private life | Cancer |
| 5th | Romance, creativity, pleasure, children | Leo |
| 6th | Daily work, health, routines, service | Virgo |
| 7th | Partnership, marriage, close one-to-one relationships | Libra |
| 8th | Intimacy, shared resources, transformation, inheritance | Scorpio |
| 9th | Travel, higher learning, beliefs, philosophy | Sagittarius |
| 10th | Career, reputation, public life, ambition | Capricorn |
| 11th | Friends, groups, community, hopes | Aquarius |
| 12th | The unconscious, solitude, endings, spirituality | Pisces |
Empty houses aren’t bad. With ten planets and twelve houses, some houses will always be empty. To read an empty house, look at the sign on its cusp and where that sign’s ruling planet sits.
Which house system should you use?
Different systems divide the houses differently. Placidus is the default in most Western software; Whole Sign houses (each house is one whole sign, starting from your Rising sign) are popular with traditional and Hellenistic astrologers and are standard in Vedic astrology. If a planet sits near a house boundary, it may change house between systems; many astrologers read both and see which describes your life better.
Step 4: The Four Angles
The angles are the four most sensitive points in a chart. Planets close to them (within about 5°) are especially prominent.
| Angle | Also called | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Ascendant (AC) | Rising sign, cusp of the 1st house | Your outward style, body, how others first see you |
| Imum Coeli (IC) | Cusp of the 4th house | Roots, home, inner foundations |
| Descendant (DC) | Cusp of the 7th house | What you seek and attract in partners |
| Midheaven (MC) | Cusp of the 10th house (in most systems) | Career, calling, public image |
Step 5: The 5 Major Aspects (How the Parts Connect)
Aspects are the angles between planets. Each has an allowed margin, called an orb, usually up to about 8° for major aspects (wider for the Sun and Moon, tighter for minor aspects).
| Aspect | Angle | Symbol | Nature | Reads as |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Conjunction | 0° | ☌ | Fusion | The two energies act as one, strongly |
| Sextile | 60° | ⚹ | Easy opportunity | A talent that grows when you use it |
| Square | 90° | □ | Tension | Friction that drives effort and growth |
| Trine | 120° | △ | Natural flow | A gift that comes easily |
| Opposition | 180° | ☍ | Polarity | A balance to find between two sides |
“Hard” aspects (squares, oppositions) aren’t bad luck: they’re often where people develop the most strength and drive. “Soft” aspects (trines, sextiles) are natural gifts that can be taken for granted.
Step 6: Read the Big Three First
Before anything else, combine your Sun, Moon and Rising signs:
- Sun = who you are at your core
- Moon = what you need to feel safe and loved
- Rising = how you come across and approach life
A Leo Sun, Pisces Moon, Virgo Rising might shine creatively (Leo), feel deeply and absorb others’ moods (Pisces), and come across as modest and organised (Virgo). Full guide: Sun, Moon and Rising signs explained.
Step 7: Put It Together, a 7-Step Reading Order
- Rising sign and its ruler. Find your Ascendant sign, then the planet that rules it (your “chart ruler”) and its sign and house.
- Sun and Moon by sign and house.
- Planets on the angles (within about 5° of the AC, IC, DC or MC).
- Element and modality balance. Count planets per element: lots of fire, little water? That tells you something.
- Personal planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars) by sign and house.
- The tightest aspects, especially those involving the Sun, Moon or chart ruler.
- Your question. For love, look at Venus, Mars, the Moon, the 5th and 7th houses and the Descendant; for career, the Midheaven, the 10th, 6th and 2nd houses and Saturn.
A worked example
Venus in Scorpio in the 7th house, square Mars in Leo.
- Planet: Venus, love and attraction.
- Sign: Scorpio, intense, loyal, all-or-nothing.
- House: 7th, committed partnership.
- Aspect: square Mars in Leo, desire that wants to be seen and admired, pulling against Venus’s need for private depth.
Reading: someone who loves deeply and seeks a soul-level partnership, attracted to magnetic, expressive people, and who grows by balancing passion with trust. That’s how a single placement becomes a sentence; a full reading weaves dozens of them together. For love placements in depth, see Venus signs in love.
Beyond the Basics
- North and South Nodes: often read as your life direction (North) and comfort zone or past patterns (South).
- Chiron: the “wounded healer”, where an old hurt can become a gift for helping others.
- Retrograde planets at birth: an inward, reflective expression of that planet. About one person in five is born with Mercury retrograde, since Mercury spends roughly a fifth of each year retrograde (Mercury retrograde dates).
- Transits: where the planets are now, compared with your chart; this is how astrologers time events, like a Saturn return.
- Synastry: comparing two charts for compatibility (zodiac compatibility readings).
What an Astrologer Adds
Learning your chart’s building blocks is rewarding, and a good reading takes it further: an experienced astrologer weighs everything at once, notices patterns a beginner would miss, uses transits and progressions to time what’s coming, and answers your actual question rather than describing placements one by one. A 30-minute online birth chart reading costs about $150 at the median rate, or from $84.73 as a first reading with Kasamba’s welcome offer (full astrology reading prices).
Astrologers we’ve reviewed who read charts in depth:
- Melodie (Kasamba): 25 years on the platform; member of AFAN, NCGR and ISAR; works the chart and transits methodically.
- Sylvia the Clairvoyant (Kasamba): Kepler-trained astrologer with formal charting education; $2.99/min by voice.
- Mystical Love Knight (Kasamba): birth-chart-based love and life-path readings at $2.49/min chat.
- PlutonianDust (Purple Garden): astrology layered under tarot, strong on timing; bring your birth time.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I read my birth chart for beginners?
Start with your Sun, Moon and Rising signs, then read each planet in three layers: the planet (what part of you), the sign (how it expresses itself) and the house (where in life). Finally, look at the tightest aspects between planets to see how those parts work together.
What does my birth chart say about me?
It describes your personality, emotional needs, communication style, how you love and act, your strengths and challenges, and the areas of life where you’ll focus most. The Sun shows your core identity, the Moon your emotional needs, and the Rising sign how you meet the world.
Do I need my exact birth time for a birth chart?
For the full chart, yes. Birth time determines your Rising sign and houses, since the Ascendant changes sign about every two hours. Without it you can still read most planets by sign, and an astrologer can try to estimate the time through rectification.
What are the 12 houses in astrology?
They’re 12 areas of life: self (1st), money (2nd), communication (3rd), home (4th), romance and creativity (5th), work and health (6th), partnership (7th), intimacy and shared resources (8th), travel and beliefs (9th), career (10th), friends and community (11th) and the unconscious (12th).
What are aspects in a birth chart?
Aspects are angles between planets. The five major ones are the conjunction (0°), sextile (60°), square (90°), trine (120°) and opposition (180°). Trines and sextiles show natural ease; squares and oppositions show tension that drives growth.
What house system should I use?
Placidus is the most common default in Western astrology software; Whole Sign houses are popular in traditional and Vedic astrology. Try both and see which describes your life better, especially for planets near house cusps.
