The short answer: your life path number comes from your full birth date, reduced to a single digit (or the master numbers 11, 22 or 33). For compatibility, many numerologists group the numbers into three families that understand each other naturally: 1, 5 and 7 (independent, curious, freedom-loving), 2, 4 and 8 (steady, practical, builders) and 3, 6 and 9 (creative, warm, humanitarian). Numbers in the same family usually click easily; numbers from different families can be wonderfully complementary, with a little more understanding. Master numbers pair especially well with their base family: 11 with 2, 22 with 4, 33 with 6.

A commonly used chart built on the three number families. Numerologists’ systems differ, so treat it as a starting point; the full picture includes each person’s expression, soul urge and personal year numbers.

How to Calculate Your Life Path Number

  1. Reduce the month, day and year separately to a single digit (keep 11, 22 or 33 if they appear).
  2. Add the three results and reduce again.

Example: August 14, 1992

  • Month: August = 8
  • Day: 14 → 1 + 4 = 5
  • Year: 1992 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 21 → 2 + 1 = 3
  • Total: 8 + 5 + 3 = 16 → 1 + 6 = Life path 7

Master numbers: if any step produces 11, 22 or 33, numerologists usually keep it. Someone born November 2, 1990: month 11 (master), day 2, year 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19 → 10 → 1; total 11 + 2 + 1 = 14 → life path 5. Someone whose total reaches 29 → 2 + 9 = 11 is a life path 11.

Same Number Couples

Two people with the same life path number understand each other instantly, sharing the same strengths and the same blind spots. Two 2s or two 6s often make deeply devoted couples; two 1s or two 8s may need to take turns leading; two 5s have endless adventures but benefit from shared routines.

Your Relationship Number

Some numerologists add the two life path numbers together to find the relationship number, the energy of the partnership itself:

Example: life path 7 + life path 3 = 10 → 1 + 0 = relationship number 1: a partnership that encourages independence, new beginnings and leadership.

Relationship numberThe partnership’s energy
1Independence, initiative, new starts

4Stability, commitment, building together

8Ambition, success, shared goals

Life Path Numbers, Zodiac Signs and More

Numerology is one lens on compatibility. Astrology offers others: zodiac signs and their best matches, Venus signs in love and Chinese zodiac compatibility. Many readers combine them for a fuller picture.

What a Numerology Reading Adds

A compatibility chart compares one number each. A numerology reading compares your full profiles: life path, expression, soul urge and personality numbers, and the personal year each of you is in, which often explains why a relationship feels easy one year and challenging the next. A typical online numerology reader in our audit charges a median of $4.99 a minute. Readers we’ve reviewed who use numerology:

  • VedicGuru (Kasamba, $1.99/min chat): Vedic astrology plus numerology; 29,195 readings.
  • Psychic Kayla (Purple Garden): love, union and manifestation with numerology; a perfect 5.0 across 39,760 readings.
  • Regina Jacks (Keen, $3.59/min): fourth-generation clairvoyant using tarot, astrology and numerology for love questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which life path numbers are most compatible?

Numbers in the same family are traditionally the most compatible: 1, 5 and 7; 2, 4 and 8; and 3, 6 and 9. Master numbers pair well with their base families: 11 with 2, 22 with 4 and 33 with 6.

How do I calculate my life path number?

Reduce your birth month, day and year to single digits separately (keeping 11, 22 or 33), add them together, and reduce again. For August 14, 1992: 8 + 5 + 3 = 16 → 7.

What life path number is compatible with 7?

1 and 5 are the most natural matches for a 7, sharing its independence and curiosity, and 4 offers grounding stability.

What is the best match for life path 1?

5 and 7 (shared independence) and 3 (fun and admiration). Two 1s can work well if they take turns leading.

Can incompatible life path numbers have a good relationship?

Yes. Numbers from different families are often complementary: one brings what the other lacks. Open communication about different needs, such as freedom versus security, is what makes these pairings thrive.

What is a relationship number in numerology?

The sum of both partners’ life path numbers, reduced to a single digit. It describes the energy of the partnership itself; for example, a 2 relationship number is romantic and harmonious, a 4 stable and committed.
